Connect My K-1 Students to the World of Fine Art

My students need a multimedia projector to work with a laptop in order to reflect on, interpret, and evaluate works of art using the language of art criticism.

Grades PreK-2

This year I am the visual art teacher for grades K-1 in a NYC elementary school. I do not have an art room therefore many of the ideas that I have will need to be consolidated in an “art cart” where teaching materials are easy to transport. In order to effectively help my K-1 students master the NYC and NYS Visual Arts Standards, I wish to prepare PowerPoint slide presentations. I also intend to connect students to the valuable museums, art galleries, great literary works, and cultural collections on the Internet. In addition my goal is to create an online gallery of student work that I will be able to present to grades K-1 as well as to the community. This projector will help me connect students the to the wonderful world of fine art.

We are a Title I school and do not get all the supplies that we need. I do arrange as many field trips that I can to the wonderful cultural institutions in NYC for them, but I need to continue that connection in the classroom. I noticed how excited they are to learn about artists such as van Gogh, Picasso and Monet through the reading of picture books.

The InFocus projector that you will be funding will enable me to travel from room to room, enriching the lives of New York City schoolchildren and enhancing not only art education but literacy in the arts. My intent is to provide opportunities for students to "become literate in art, make social, cultural, and historical connections, engage in learning beyond the classroom, share in the rich diversity of their communities and become life-long learners and advocates for art." These opportunities will provide students with an aesthetic education as well.

I want to thank you for making a difference in the lives of NYC school children by supporting Donorschoose.org. Your contributions are valuable not only in providing much needed resources to meet the demands of a global society, but letting my students know that there are people out there in the world that are interested in their education. You provide the role model that they in turn can use in their lives to give to others in need. Thank you!
