Urban Middle School Music Students Seek to Share their Musical Voice! My general music students are a wonderful mix of urban grade 6 children. Many have moved to my city from impoverished countries and live here as political refugees. However, I also teach a large number of students who come from locally poor homes where the opportunity to take private music and composition lessons is just a dream.

Won't you please help my students find their musical voice and share it with the world? These children are eager to express themselves in new and interesting ways - music is a wonderful avenue for them to explore. As a part of my classroom music curriculum, my students hear and learn about music from the far corners of our world. Many of them are hearing music from their native countries for the first time since moving here. The keyboards I have in my classroom are old, but my students use them with such focus it is amazing to me. The big frustration we struggle with on a daily basis, is the student's inability to share what they write. New MIDI keyboards will facilitate the next step for them. To share music with their community!

The typical class size I teach is 24 students per class. I would love to have 3new MIDI keyboards so that each child can compose alone or with a partner. Following the keyboards, the next step is to add 3 MIDI computer controllers allowing students to share their music with the friends both near and far.

By helping my classroom technology become current, you will be providing my students a voice in today's world. For my foreign students, you will be ensuring that they will stay connected to the world cultures from which they needed to leave. You will be helping them to learn to interact in a meaningful way with their new country and peers. My local students will learn how to understand the refugee students and begin to appreciate "What a Wonderful World" it is in which we live.
