I Can't Picture It!

My students need one 24" flat screen monitor.

"I don't know what you're talking about!" My students may not always admit it, but this is often the case. As a veteran teacher, who works with a diverse population of students, many who have limited English proficiency, I often struggle to help my students grasp unfamiliar ideas or concepts. If they can’t visualize what they’re learning about, then they won’t understand, and they certainly won’t be as engaged and as interested as students who can make a picture to help them remember and think about our classroom topics. Too often, due to a lack of experiences outside the classroom, my students have difficulty understanding what many would consider simple ideas in our reading material. In fact, while recently reading a fifth grade classic, "Island of the Blue Dolphins" my students had no idea what a kelp bed was, and couldn't imagine jewelry made from abalone. These ideas were critical for my students to understand the environment our main character was living in, and what they were reading. No less important were the notions contained in our read-aloud novel, which was set in a large Medieval church. Short of a time traveling field trip, running to the library for an encyclopedia photo, or shifting my ungainly forty pound monitor to face my students (a very risky proposition) this situation necessitated immediate attention. What I need is a way to SHOW my students these objects without interrupting our reading lesson. A lightweight monitor screen that I can turn toward the students to explain, via the Internet, the idea or concept is what we need. I can picture it now: I'm reading with a small group of students; we encounter an unfamiliar concept, an ecosystem, for example. I turn to my left, Google ecosystem, and make my selection. Delighted, I turn the monitor toward my students to display a close up photo of a local wetland. Voila'! A field trip with neither cost, nor braving the elements. I know that having a flat screen monitor will not only improve my teaching it will also improve my student's learning. With your generous help, I can take my students places they might otherwise never see. Pictures can paint a thousand words, and those pictures can help my students 'see' what I'm talking about.
