I teach students with learning disabilities, intellectual disabilities, and emotional behavior disorders at a Title I school.

The depth of knowledge that students are expected to master at the elementary level is unbelievable. Younger students are expected to learn material and skills that were once taught in upper grade levels. Expectations are so much higher than they were a few years ago.

Trade books are an interesting way to introduce skills across all subjects. They are packed with brightly colored pictures and use child-friendly language. Younger students enjoy having anything read to them, and through the use of trade books, they can be taught grade level skills in a fun and exciting way.

You will make it possible for my students to have access to grade level standards, breaking the cycle of repeated pencil and paper tasks. Eventually, students will have to show their knowledge in written format; however, they are often more successful when the information has been presented through the use of books.
