Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

School can be a stressful experience for students (and their teachers). I teach Home and Career Skills in a grade 5 -7 middle school. Our school is in a high-need community where many of the children and their families are learning English and American culture. We work very hard to become proficient for the required state testing.

Many of my students have little opportunity for physical activities outside of the school setting. They come to school to learn and then return home, often to care for younger siblings or to try to study. As a school community, we have been troubled by the growing number of students with little nutritional or physical activity guidance. Several students expressed an interest in forming a Yoga club for after-school. This is an excellent idea for my students because we can discuss the nutritional needs for their growing bodies and minds along with an activity that allows them to relax and relieve stress while they are learning the yoga positions and improving their concentration. The club will be meeting once a week to start, with the hope to expand to at least twice a week as student interest grows.

To help get our club off the the ground, we will need 25 Yoga mats to allow the students to exercise safely. Yoga mats are different from the traditional exercise mats that are used in schools in that the mats are textured to keep bare feet from slipping. My students and I hope that having the opportunity to practice Yoga safely will provide a stress-reducing experience that will lead to healthier lifestyles and better grades in school and on their tests.

With your help, these children will be able to accomplish their goal of improving their schoolwork and test scores, while improving their health, concentration and agility with Yoga exercises. For many of my students, this is a chance to give them skills that they will need to be successful for the rest of their lives.
