Mrs. S. Pinehurst Elementary School
Lake View, NY Grades PreK-2

As a teacher of multi-age Kindergarten and 1st grade students, I have seen the joy that reading can bring and the power that books can have to teach and provide a vehicle for engaging students in interactive conversations.

As a teacher leader, implementing a common book-of-the-month, school-wide, with my young students as the leaders will be an agent for change for our school community. The challenge with the implementation is the overwhelming cost involved in providing books for each of our 32 classrooms. A book in each classroom will provide students with a common theme-literacy as as a motivating force for change through authentic conversation!

My K/1 students have chosen these books because of their specific moral messages. These messages involving building community and resolving conflicts will help our school work on these specific messages together and over the period of an entire month. The use of read-alouds, rich conversations and strategy development for dealing with these common issues will help everyone to take ownership for finding solutions and "being" the change that we need.

Your support of this project has the potential of empowering my young students to be literacy leaders in our school--to help reenergize, inspire and recommit ourselves to our literacy purpose and focus in our school community.
