I am a fourth grade teacher in a high need New York Public School. My school consists of a large immigrant community, mostly students from Bangladesh and India, many of which are English Language Learners. The students in my school, my class in particular, are eager and motivated to learn. Teaching in a New York City Public School is a wonderful and rewarding job, but there are also many difficulties I face. With constant budget cuts in NYC there is barely money for the essentials such as books and pencils, let alone other materials that are important for the classroom like a printer/photo copy machine. One problem that my students face is that we don't have a color printer in our classroom. We have two computers in the classroom and just one, old, black and white printer that works on occasion. I have difficulty printing out notes to send home to the parents and students usually can't print out work that they type. Another problem that I face is photo copies. There is only one photo copy machine in my whole school. Due to the high volume of copies being made in an elementary school the machine often breaks down and I am unable to get copies. The school photo copying procedure also makes teachers submit copies one week in advance. If I need a worksheet copied or to send a note and the machine is broken or if it's not a week in advance-I'm STUCK! A color printer/photo copy machine would solve all these problems. If I had a printer/photo copy machine in my classroom I would be able to print out colorful banners, notes, and worksheets for my students. I could even print out digital pictures of my students to display in the classroom or the hallway. Having a copy machine would alleviate all my photo copy issues. I would be able to copy the worksheets and notes I need when I need them, even if the photo copy machine in my school is broken and if it's not a week ahead. With little money to spend, most administrators don't consider a printer/photo copy machine to be an essential part of the classroom, therefore they don't allocate funds for items such as these. In this day and age students in schools, in our technology era, really do need and deserve a color printer. Please help my students and I and please COLOR OUR WORLD!
