Rambunctious Robots

My students need 13 robotics kits.

I teach gifted education in Missouri. The main industry is lumber. The school district is small and includes two small elementary schools, a middle school, and a high school. I teach grades 1 through 6 and have about 25 students in the gifted program. The students come to the gifted classroom for a whole day once each week. We work on multi-disciplinary units such as Walk Like an Egyptian and Super Structures. The students have the chance to use problem-solving skills and be creative. I feel these gifted students need exposure to many areas of knowledge because they have many interests and talents to explore.

The gifted students in our district do not have exposure to other cultures and many types of technology. Many of the students have not traveled beyond the borders of Missouri. They have not built robots before and have use only knex and legos to build things. The students in fifth and sixth grades have seen robots on television but have not had personal experience in building robots or even seeing one in person. This would provide an opportunity for the students to construct a robot kit by following instructions. These kits would give them (hopefully) a positive experience with robotics.

I would like to have two different robot kits. The fifth graders could build one type of robot and the sixth graders could build another type and they could compare the two types, the parts common to each, and how each moves. They could learn the parts of a robot and the electronics involved in construct one. They will also have to follow directions to construct the robots. We will discuss what robots are used for today and what they may be used for in the future. Maybe one or more of the students will study robotics and build the robots of the future!

These students are eager to learn. They love building things and seeing the results-good or bad. They learn from their mistakes and love to make revisions when needed. Robotics kits are exactly the kind of activity they love. These kits will help them learn about robotics, following directions, and solving problems. Currently we don't do a robotics unit because the cost of the kits is expensive. These kits would open up the world of robotics to students who have never entered that world.
