Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

This year I am teaching second grade. I keep my students for three years, so this is my second year as their teacher. Half of my students speak English as a second language. While the other half have challenges such as poverty, and broken families to overcome.

While teaching science to my students I find it particularly hard to explain terms such as weathering and erosion or tundra and rain forests. I just attended a great training that spoke of the importance of giving the students mental imagery to increase understanding and interest. As you can understand it is very difficult to learn about a topic you have no background knowledge on.

These photo cards will provide a first look at the concepts being taught. They will be used for many different aspects of my units of study. First, they will be used as observation charts. This is where students record what they see in the pictures or ask a question about what they see. The photos will also put an image with a vocabulary word for my second language students. In addition once their interest is sparked they can read the back of the card and learn key vocabulary. There are also vocabulary words with definitions I plan to use as a concentration game so my students will continue to use the terms after the units are over.

Your help will ensure that my students are able to put a picture to important science concepts being taught. In the primary grades I like to think that I am giving them files of background knowledge so that when they get into middle and high school they have a frame of reference when the teacher expands on these concepts.
