Monsters, Uglies and Aliens-- Teen Novels for the Classroom

My students need 20+ young adult novels, including works by Stephenie Meyer, Walter Dean Myers and Laurie Halse Anderson.

Each year the American Library Association selects the best YA (young adult) novels. This special category of books speaks in a language that teens know and understand. Furthermore, the themes and plots are all teen-centered. As a result, teens like to read these books. YA books not only encourage students to read, but they also stand as exciting contrasts to the classic novels that are at the heart of our curriculum. I would like to incorporate several of these YA titles into my high school, English classroom including Monster, Uglies, and Thirteen Reasons Why. My hope is to have students participate in reading circles in which they share what they learn from their books. I would also like to use this proposal to figure out which YA novels might be good to incorporate as class sets for future students. (I'll be back to write another proposal then). If we want American students to succeed in the real world, then we need to encourage them to better themselves at every opportunity. YA novels excite students. If they like what they read in class, then maybe they will read more on their own. After our book circle project, I will make all of the books in this proposal available for checkout. Wouldn't you love to be a part of this project!
