The Next Great Sportscaster?

My students need 3 microphones, 3 microphone cables, and 3 desktop stands.

You could fund the next great sportscaster from North Carolina, following in the footsteps of Howard Cosell and Stuart Scott! I teach Sports & Entertainment Marketing I, and yes, it is as fun as it sounds! In its second year, my class has attracted students from 9th to 12th grade. Our school has a way-too-high dropout rate, and I'd like to think that classes like mine help maintain an interest in learning.

This year, we began producing a weekly podcast that covers our athletics teams and events. It's been well-received so far: our podcast gets between 60 to 200 hits a week, our school newspaper has written an article about it, and students I don't even know approach me and ask if they can be a guest on the podcast. We started this podcast with no money--we're using free audio editing software and have borrowed two headsets with microphones from a computer class. This lack of equipment has limited the format of our show. Only two students can participate simultaneously, and when they interview an athlete, one student watches while the other student conducts the interview.

We recently were able to use some department funds to purchase a basic podcasting kit, which includes one microphone and an audio mixing board. The three microphones we're requesting will allow us to have four students participate in the podcast simultaneously, producing a show that allows for more interviews and interaction among the participants. Producing a weekly podcast has made my students develop skills in researching the Internet (for sports scores), scheduling and conducting interviews (which will help them when they work on their senior projects), reading scripts and oral presentations (another part of senior projects). Plus, they get a lot of positive comments from their fellow classmates when their podcast goes online. It's a point of school pride that we're the only high school in the county that is doing what we're doing.

Your donation will help us "raise our game" in terms of the quality of the podcast. With enough practice, my students will be able to produce a high school version of ESPN shows like Pardon the Interruption or The Sports Reporters. Our podcast has already generated excitement among fellow students--with a well-produced, professional-sounding podcast, my students will make themselves and their interviewees sound good, and they will have something to show potential employers should they decide to pursue a career in broadcast radio or television! Thank you for your consideration!
