Changing the World Using Digital Camcorders

My students need a DVD camcorder with accessories (extra battery, tripod, and package of mini DVDs) and a webcam in order to tape Holocaust Survivor stories and create a DVD of their experiences, as well as a "thank you" video for the participating survivors.

Hi! I teach 12th grade Humanities at a Charter School in California. Our charter is founded on project-based instruction and a social justice theme. We are striving to create globally-conscious individuals who actively participate in the world around them. We are in the middle of a urban, high-need community, a majority of our students are Title 1, and speak English as a second language. Most of our students coming from Central America.

For the last two years I have done a field trip where I have brought together (roughly) 100 inner-city youth with 10 Holocaust Survivors and created a an open dialog. We were able to divide the students into smaller groups of 10 and allow them one hour of time to hear an individual Survivor's story, as well as ask questions and respond to what they were hearing. Then, the Survivors formed a panel and took questions from the larger group for another hour. Afterward, we provided lunch for the survivors and allowed both groups (Survivors and students) to mingle and eat. I have stood in the middle of the clearing, completely surrounded by these small groups, and suddenly feel a lump swelling in my throat and tears streaming from my eyes. No matter where my eyes roamed I saw these kids who, previously, had never even heard of the Holocaust, completely enraptured by the tales they were hearing. Some were wiping their noses, others had tears in their eyes, and a few were openly sobbing. Never before had I seen these, seemingly, rough-neck kids so affected. Never had I seen them so thoroughly engaged. Due to advanced age of the Survivors, we need to find a way to document this experience.

In order to document the stories of these very important people we need a camcorder and the equipment that goes with it. Likewise, we also need a webcam so that the students can create video blogs and video messages about what occurs with genocide. They will also study the genocide in Darfur, and will need to get that message out to the greater world.

What we are asking for does cost money. However, it is for such a worthy cause...helping to rid the world of genocidal tendencies through education. You can help us with this and, thus, know that you are impacting the world in an extremely positive way. You can help document truths that the world needs to remember. You, too, can impact the world positively. Will you help? Will you help the world remember "Never again!"? Please, think about the importance of such a deed. Through your generous donation you will not only help my students become active participants in the fight against genocide in the 21st century, but you will help them understand that a single person's choice to act CAN make all the difference in the world.
