Frightening, hilarious, historical, suspenseful, lighthearted... The list of Sunshine State Young Readers that comes out each year in the state of Florida has it all! Each of my seventh grade students has a different preference for the type of books they like. This reality makes a one-size-fits-all class set of books a problem. Reading as a class allows us to discuss as a whole group the features of a certain novel. But some students, depending on the book, tune out because the chosen novel is just 'not their style'. That's why I need a variety of great books to appeal to the vast array of interests within my classroom. Where can I find a variety of great books? From the Sunshine State Young Reader list of high-quality, high-interest books for middle school students.

The novel study sets (four books in each) on my list each come from one of the Sunshine State Young Reader recommendation lists between 2001 - 2008. In addition, I have read most of them myself, so I can personally guarantee the quality and appeal. The novel sets include scary (The Skeleton Man), historical (Fever 1793), adventure (Sasquatch), science fiction (Gregor the Overlander), humor (No More Dead Dogs), suspense (Three Days), and mystery (Chasing Vermeer). This way, students can select the type of book that best suits their preference and team up with other students who have the same interests. Students will build skills in creating their own literature discussion groups. We've been discussing novels, short stories, poetry, and non-fiction texts since our very first day of class. I have been the facilitator up to this point. But with a little bit of guidance and structure, students can venture out on their own and begin their own meaningful discussions of books that intrigue them!

These books will benefit my students greatly, as they learn to study literature independently and facilitate their own discussions. They will be interested and motivated to do so because they will be reading and discussing books of their own choice and that appeal to their own style! The list of books has a little bit of everything so that each student's personal preference can be met!

Your help will make it possible for students to become self-directed in their literature study and discussion. Your assistance will provide students with choices and allow them to select the book that suits their individual interests. This will ignite their passion for reading as they discuss with their peers what makes their book choices so wonderful!
