Thirteen different cultural/ethnic/language backgrounds are represented by our 175 4th-6th grade students, some of whom are learning English. All these students visit the library for lesson each week!

Valuable science and social studies information is often hidden in picture book style resources. Media savvy 4th-6th graders respond to screen images from book pages but turn away from the read-aloud format. Research has shown that visual images enhance learning for all students, especially among English language learners.

The document camera with/light provides a way to present a variety of images and information to older students - without having to buy a "class set" of books! Other librarians have shared the delight that intermediate students can still express for picture books with curriculum content!

You will make it possible for all of the students to have access to valuable learning experiences in the library, utilizing an underused resource, "Picture Books for Older Readers!"
