Ms. S. Rosemary Kennedy School
Wantagh, NY Grades 3-5

I am a dedicated & passionate speech-language pathologist from New York who is currently working with nonverbal children with Autism.

As a speech-language pathologist I am practically a walking encyclopedia of idioms - you know, those sayings like "look before you leap", "break a leg", etc. But there is one in particular that I find so profound. The old adage "a picture is worth a thousand words" is often used to describe the power an image has to convey a message - often times far better than even the most eloquent verbalization ever could. For a nonverbal child, images become infinitely more powerful as they are often the only means a nonverbal child has of understanding the world around them and communicating wants/needs to others. But pictures are only powerful if you can understand them. While programs like Google image have revolutionized speech language therapy programs by enabling therapists to acquire millions and millions of images instantaneously, I am seeing more and more students so significantly affected by their disability that they are unable to generalize a photograph of "a gym" with the gym at our school or a photograph of "a ball" with the particular ball that they love to play with.

Using a digital camera, I could take photographs of the people, places, and things that are MOST important in my students' lives and create a method of communication using those pictures - the ones my students would best understand BUT . . . . I don't have a quality camera or printer to make this happen. A 10 megapixel digital camera and laser color printer would dramatically improve my students' ability to understand the world around them and communicate their wants/needs more effectively.

Have you ever played the "no talking game" where you tried to see who could go the longest without using words to communicate. How relieved were you when someone finally blurted out a word and you were free to talk again? Now imagine having to play the "no talking game" for life. For many of the students I work with, they will never use words to communicate functionally. But you can bring a different kind of voice to my nonverbal students by donating a digital camera and printer so that they can let their pictures do the talking. Thank you so much for reading this proposal and for showing those affected by autism that sometimes, even through their silence, they are heard!
