We are a Science & Math Academy in a large urban area in Illinois. The students in this low income neighborhood with high unemployment and high crime have begun to realize that a good education will take them places. While they have few possessions and more than a few live in a homeless shelter, they hear daily that what they put in their heads can never be taken away or stolen from them. And many are starting to believe and act on that mantra.

Our school has a mobile cart with 30 Macintosh laptops. This cart can be, and is, borrowed by many classroom teachers to add a technological component to their lessons. Students have created amazing presentations on these MACs, thus making them fluent in both Apple and PC. I also use the cart for science fair with students in the upper grades. They use the MACs for research, and to write their paper for submission to the area and city fairs. They have been saving their data to the desktop of the MAC they work on. Since these laptops are used by several teachers and classrooms, the work saved to the desktop sometimes gets moved, edited or deleted by unknowing students. The author then either has to spend time searching for their work, researching topics again, or must rewrite their work entirely.

If each student had their own flash drive, they could keep their work safe. I would have a small envelope with the student's name on it. Each time we used the MACs I would give them their flashdrive. That way each student is responsible for their own work, and will always have their saved data to work on each class. As they turn in the MAC to the cart at the end of class, they would turn in the flash drive and envelope as well. After science fair, students will still be able to use the flash drives for further research papers and other projects.

These students who are learning the value of hard work need a place to keep that work safe. It is frustrating to work so diligently and then have no way to ensure you will see that work again. They are used to having things stolen or destroyed. If we can get the knowledge into their heads and onto a flash drive, that will be a major step to a successful education.
