My students need a classroom set of Thesauruses to refer to while writing.

We are determined to be good, creative writers by the end of the year! We struggle with our writing, but not anymore- we will edit and perfect until it is perfect!

I teach in a low-income school district. I have 20 students in my fifth grade class and only some who care. I am constantly trying to find new ideas to get my students involved in their learning to help them get interested. Previous years these uninterested students have been lost in the shuffle, and as a result they do not care and are behind. I am determined to get these students to feel as though they DO matter and they CAN succeed! Many of these students have parents who belittle them and do not care about them. They hear it every day that they do not matter, they're worthless, and will amount to nothing. I do not want these students to continue going through life expecting to fail.

One of the subject areas we are behind in is English. Our school does have an English curriculum, but in order for it to be successful you have to add supplemental activities. I am constantly researching, inventing, creating these supplemental items for our English class. We are working on using creative sentences, one of the key resources we need to spice up our sentences is a thesaurus. We now have a "Dead Word Cemetery" for the bland overused words, for example, really, big, very, fun, etc. In order for my students to begin the process of creating wonderful, fantastic, spicy sentences they will need a thesaurus. My students do not have a huge vocabulary and they struggle thinking of a word to replace fun. This is where a thesaurus would come in handy. Not to mention they would be learning the basic skills of how to use a thesaurus.

I think a big part of what my students would take away from getting these thesauruses donated to them is, "somebody out there cares about me". They know I care about them, but many of them have never been very far from home, and to know there are people out there who care about their education may encourage them to continue. With your support you are going to be able to ensure my students have a chance to really create some wonderful sentences. Which will turn into stories.
