This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a 7th grade Language Arts teacher at a public middle school in New York. I have two classes with 67 smiling faces who I wouldn't trade for anything in the world. You would definitely call my school and students - for the lack of a better term - financially challenged. Every kid in the school is provided, by the state, with free lunch. Unfortunately for my classroom library and students, their families and the school's administration really cannot spare a dime. This hurts them the most inside my classroom, in my library which leaves A LOT to be desired.

What my students need RIGHT NOW are some books that they can read and enjoy! I have inherited a larger than usual amount of students reading below their expected reading levels. I'll have no problem working with them to meet and exceed their expectations - that's the easy part. I've been doing this for twelve years! The only snag that I have encountered is this - I don't have enough lower level books to accommodate the current needs of my classes.

But that's where you come in! The two most often requested book series are titled "Dear Dumb Diary" and "Franny K. Stein, Mad Scientist" - hands down! My students are familiar with these titles because they are on their reading levels. These books are easy for them to understand. My kids NEED these books! With these books in our classroom library, they would have some familiar and fun titles to sink their teeth into and I'd have a plethora of texts to teach from and use as motivation. I can say with confidence that if the "Dumb Diary" and "Mad Scientist" series appeared in our classroom, the interest levels of my students would instantly skyrocket through the roof!

These books are wanted badly - asked for everyday - and constant topics of discussion and reference. By bringing these books inside of my classroom, I am confident that my students will work even harder to get to where they need to be academically. And they'd read some pretty funny books along the way! Seriously... these books are hysterical!
