Birds are in the house! I teach science, language arts and writing to fifth grade students. My fifth grade students are participating in a tutoring program for the second graders. Everywhere the curriculum overlaps for the two grade levels, we work together. Our school has a high English as a second language population. We work together as teachers and students to provide as many different resources and hands-on experiences to enhance science and language learning. Whether students are English language learners or second and fifth grade students, science and language arts contain a huge amount of new and challenging content and concepts.

Our students are studying birds together this year with the help of a program offered by Cornell University. Students are identifying and counting birds, entering data into the Cornell website, and producing graphs and writing entries that will be published in Cornell's magazine which is sent out to the students. Fifth and second grade students study environmental science and life cycles. To enhance our birding program this year and bring it to "life", we would like to install bird houses throughout the schoolyard and place a bird cam in one (the bird cam we would like is remote and can be moved from house to house).

My students need the bird houses and bird cam to achieve this goal! These materials will allow students to observe birds, their nesting and feeding behaviors, eggs, and hatchlings up close! We have a school "television station" that makes broadcasts. The birding and bird cam activities will be featured each morning for the viewing and learning of all students and teachers at our school.

This inspiration will add a new excitement and interest level to their birding experiences and science, language arts and writing finished products!
