Biking Beyond Boundaries: An Urban Bicycle Initiative

My students need mural paint, bicycle tire pumps, and multimedia speakers.

Chicago, IL Grades PreK-2

I teach at a new K-8 charter elementary school which empowers students through relevant, hands-on learning experiences. My colleagues and I focus on educating the "whole child" through a curriculum that incorporates academic excellence, character development, health/wellness, and a love of learning. Located on the West Side, our school serves a population that is 98% African-American or Latino and 83% low-income. My students have the unique opportunity to learn a fitness skill that will benefit them for a lifetime: bicycling! Our school's Biking Beyond Boundaries Initiative introduces all of our students, grades K-8, to the art of bicycle safety, skills, maintenance, and repair. Students have the opportunity to learn riding skills during weekly physical education classes, and learn bicycle maintenance and repair during after-school and weekend programming. As students progress into upper grades, they will conduct many of their local field trips via biking, saving on transportation expenses and increasing their level of physical activity. We have been fortunate enough to have a fleet of bicycles, helmets, and tools donated through private sources. However, we are still in need of 1) Tire Pumps. Six (6) basic hand pumps are needed to outfit the bicycle classroom. 2) PC Speakers. A set of speakers will enable our program coordinator to create a relaxed, cooperative, and enjoyable environment in which students learn the basics of bicycle care. Music can also be used as an incentive/reward for good behavior. 3) Mural Paint. A local artist has volunteered his time to work with our students to paint the bicycle classroom (it is an old storage room that is in dire need of a fresh coat of paint!). As a charter school, our school operates on less per pupil funding than traditional public schools in the same district. As such, we do not have the extra budget money to fund these items. Your contribution will help ensure that Biking Beyond Boundaries becomes a permanent, sustainable part of our school's curriculum, and provide the opportunity for hundreds of students to learn a life skill that will benefit them well into adulthood. Thank you for considering our proposal!
