No Child Left Out.... Materials Needed for PE Inclusion!

Creating situations where students can be successful is key to physical education. I am a Special Needs/Inclusion Pre-K teacher at a Title One low-income school. We spend one hour every day on outside centers and PE. During this time it is hard to provide successful situations to the Special Needs non mobile students in my classroom. Even though we try to include them we find that in many situations they are sitting and watching the other students play and having fun. I'm sure every one will agree that exercise is important for all children, but for those with special needs - physical or mental - achievement in active movement is equally important. We need to give all our kids a chance to experience outside play, be included in socialization and exercise the way other kids do, but because of their special needs they will need some modifications and materials that will provide this.

When our children are playing outside it's a natural opportunity to work on social skills as a team. They will learn the rules of good sportsmanship. They will learn to ask for some help in a way that could be good for self-advocacy, as well as building language skills. They need to be as active as possible to maintain health and learn greater leisure and recreation skills. They need the same things any kids need. The problem is that we need some outside equipment that will include and provide these opportunities for these special kids.

I am writing this proposal in hopes to get some materials that will include my special children in outside play with the other children. The Naturally Playful Teeter Totters will promote physical movement, cooperation, as well as language development with their regular peers. A Naturally Playful Sandbox will provide language, motor development, socialization while they are outside playing with their regular peers. By providing them with the right equipment and including them beside typical developing peers we are providing them a natural opportunity to learn even pre-vocational skills like taking direction and learning to follow the rules. The benefits of inclusion are endless.

We have to make outside time successful for these kids. By providing them with the materials I have requested we can achieve this goal. These materials will provide many special kids the opportunity for inclusion in outdoor time for many years. Thank you so much for considering my proposal and helping my special children be included.
