Making Math Marvelous for Six Year Olds is NOT Mission Impossible...you just need Marvelous Math Manipulative Materials! I want to develop a love for and a deep understanding of fundamental math concepts at an early age, and I want to do so in a small group setting in which all students will be highly engaged. I teach a first grade inclusion class in which half of my class is normal functioning and the other half is challenged (either physically, emotionally, mentally or behaviorally). I also have one severely handicapped student who spends half of the day with us. I am in a very rural setting; most of the families in our community are farmers. Many of my parents did not graduate high school and very few attended college.

In order to Make Math Marvelous for my first graders, I need to make sure they believe it is fun, relevant, and most importantly, that they really can excel in math! Due to a low percentage of parents who completed high school, many of my students already have the idea that they "aren't good in math - just like mom or dad." I want to change this! EVERYONE can excel at math! However, to engage first graders, I need lots of hands-on manipulatives to use in highly educational, highly engaging math centers.

Multiple Marvelous Math Manipulatives are needed in my math centers. I have just attended a professional development seminar on developing math centers and have created a wonderful plan to correlate my curriculum and standard course of study with our math scope and sequence. I know that in order for students to excel at math, they need lots and lots of modeling, explicit instruction, and most importantly...practice! Over and over they need to practice the concepts they are learning in a safe and comfortable environment. My students will use the following items in a hands-on, minds-on manner: dice, counters, dominoes, pattern rods, addition and subtraction math facts set, spin and solve addition and subtraction centers, patterning trays, building numbers activity kit, add-a-frog math kit.

With your help, I can impact not only my students but the parents of my students by making math fun, relevant, and unmysterious! I plan to use the materials donated by YOU to host a Math Family Night so that parents can observe first hand how manipulatives and math centers are MARVELOUS methods for teaching math...much more effective than worksheets! I will design simple activities during the Math Family Night so that parents can see how they can help their children at home with math. Even parents who never completed school and who are "terrible at math" will feel comfortable and confident helping their children learn. Thank you in advance for your help and assistance in MAKING MATH MARVELOUS!
