Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

In my kindergarten classroom, I work hard to meet the needs of each individual student in a caring environment which encourages a lifelong learning. Technology today is part of our lives and children need to be exposed to the different types of technology available. The public school system cannot provide students with many technology opportunities.

This year with the budget cuts our school did not have money to help teachers with supplies or materials for extra activities. My students have expressed the desire to take pictures on their own of the different classroom activities. Because of the way that technology is moving, I would like my 5-year old students to be able to have cameras in the classroom to take their pictures and be able to share with other classes using the Internet.

The class will read and compare different versions of the Gingerbread Man and decorate their own gingerbread person. The problem will be when the materials are not found in our classroom. The children will need to write notes asking for help. They will also use SKYPE to ask other kindergarten children for suggestions. After going on a scavenger hunt, where they will take their own pictures, they will use the materials found to decorate their gingerbread people. They will take their gingerbread people home to visit their families, take pictures, and return them to school. They will be able to write a letter and mail the gingerbread people to someone they know across the country. When each gingerbread person comes back it will bring postcards and other items of interest to share with students. We will keep in touch with the individuals who received the gingerbread people via e-mail. We will also use Goggle Earth to visit the different places. To be able to do all these activities my children will need a set of digital cameras that they can use on their own, different versions of the Gingerbread Man story, and some art supplies. We are willing to share with you our accomplishments.

My students will have a great opportunity on learning new technology and to communicate outside of their world. This will be something that they will keep forever. Your contribution will be a great asset to my classroom.
