We have combined all students, general and special education, into one classroom that works off of differentiation to ensure that ALL students learn. Our 8th grade classroom teachers and students believe that working together, not in isolation, will help all students learn to work together.

We have students in one 8th grade classroom with reading levels that span from first grade through college. Audio books increase the interaction of the students to work together on a particular book, while increasing the comprehension of all students. In this low socio-economic area that we teach, many of our students do not have any means of listening to audio books. Without personal cd players, audio books are ineffective.

Word attack (the ability to read the printed word) and comprehension (the ability to determine the message) are two completely different skills. Personal cd players will allow students in the same classroom to be reading an unlimited number of books. Using audio books in the classroom will allow students with limited word attack abilities to be able to listen to the story and be able to focus on the message, increasing their comprehension.

Your help will ensure that my students will continue to progress in their reading comprehension, using books and materials that are grade appropriate, genre appropriate, and of high interest. You will make it possible for students to develop a life-long love of reading and learning.
