River Tank Ecosystem in the Classroom

My students need a 30 gallon river system tank plus the river tank plant set.

I teach science to deaf student in grades 6-8. Our class size range from 5-8 students per class. The majority of our students do not have the experiences that hearing students receive. One reason is the lack of communication with those outside of school and the other is that the majority are from poverty stricken homes.

The students enjoy hands-on activities. They are especially interested in the environment. With very low reading abilities, experiencing science by first becoming physically involved, make the learning process more real. It brings abstract information to a concrete level. This opens up a new world to these students that they otherwise would miss. What's a better way to bring "field studies" to the indoors?

Since we are not located close to a river, bringing a river ecosystem close to them would be the next best thing. There will be at least five different environments within the river system. My students, as well as, students in grades K-5 and 9-12 would benefit from this set-up since the river tank ecosystem would be in the hall that all grades will pass on their way to and from the cafeteria. It would be accessible to teachers that would like to incorporate this system into their lessons.

You will make it possible for approximately 105 deaf students to become engaged in learning about part of the environment that they are seldom exposed to. It would be a wonderful opportunity for teachers to use the river tank system to present abstract information concretely.
