The Most Rockin' English Class, EVER I teach English to ninth and tenth graders at a suburban high school. I absolutely LOVE my job and am very fortunate to work with the super young adults that I do. I believe that learning should be fun (Okay, so my students joke and tell me that my idea of fun is not their fun. We have met in the middle on the definition of fun-I say "fun" and they say "English teacher fun") and that it should never been seen as drudge work, by the teacher or the student.

Of all that I try to provide to my students, I try to provide legitimate, meaningful learning experiences. One of my greatest challenges in accomplishing this is having the resources needed to expose students to a variety of ideas that are not their own or their own culture's ideas.

I have asked for 30 copies of _I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings_ because of the nature of the book. If you have never read it, please do. It is a personal narrative, a memoir, telling of Angelou's experiences as youth and teenager-growing up in the South with her grandmother at times and at times with her mother. This project is an excellent learning opportunity for my students as they are in desperate need of "seeing" that the world is larger than the end of their respective driveways. Period.

One of the greatest obstacles of teaching, in my world, is that one can never have enough monetary means to provide my students with all of the resources that I would like. I try to do all that I can do but truth be told, I have a family as well, including a toddler who is currently refusing to sleep in his "big boy bed". Whatever you can give, it is very much appreciated. I appreciate it and so do my teenagers-whether they realize it at the time or not. : )
