Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

“I-N-D-E-P-E-N-D-E-N-T…do you know what that means?” You may not know that song, but it is a favorite of my first graders and second graders. They sing it often! But more than just sing it, I want it to become a reality in our classroom. I want my students to become independent thinkers, and most importantly, independent workers! I teach a first grade and second grade combination class at an inner city school in Los Angeles. All of my twenty students are English Language Learners. They need a great deal of support to acquire a second language and also to learn how to read. Unfortunately, there is only one of me. Therefore, we are desperate for a learning center that will help support their learning, while also teaching them to work independently.

If my students are able to work independently, I will have more time to work individually or in a small group with students. Sadly, our school lacks the funding to buy materials to outfit each room with a glorious learning center. If my proposal is chosen, my students will have the opportunity to become self-regulated learners.

However, in order to create a glorious learning center, where students can work independently in our classroom, we will need a variety of materials. The activities must be engaging, interesting, motivating, and most of all, FUN!!! We also need activities that provide multiple entry points to accommodate the various learning levels and learning styles. The learning center will consist of six different fun and exciting centers. Each center will include an independent activity to help promote literacy. In order to outfit my classroom with these centers, I am desperate for a set of word building flip books, a set of mystery readers, picture clue word building games, a set of emergent reader books, and a sentence building pocket chart kit. I am also requesting a pocket chart so the kids will be able to see their daily learning center assignments.

With your generous help, my hope is that my students will become independent workers while developing their literacy. I also hope that their new found independence will foster a sense of purpose, excitement, and empowerment. Moreover, I will no longer have twenty tiny children crowding around my desk like I was one of the Jonas Brothers, screaming, “Teacher, teacher help me!!!” Thank you so very much for considering my project.
