Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach a 2nd grade Dual Language program in a large public school in New York. Our school is located in an industrial/ urban setting.

Our students were recently given a brand new playground, but the walls surrounding the playground are bare and/or full of graffiti. My students would love to create a colorful mural on the surrounding walls to bring a little life to our urban playground! This is important because we have a high incidence of obesity in our school.

All we are lacking to create the mural are the materials! If we were given paint and brushes we would be able to create the mural of our dreams!! We are asking for outdoor paint in red, orange, yellow, green, blue, black and white. Additionally, we are asking for the paint brushes the students will use to paint the mural. Presently, the playground is surrounded by concrete walls filled with unsightly graffiti and patchwork paint to cover older graffiti. When we have the materials we need the students will be able participate in a project that would be enjoyed by children for years to come. We are hoping to create a colorful escape that inspires the children and community to come use the playground to continue exercising.
