Please help my students to learn to move to music! I am a public school music teacher to kindergarten through sixth grade students in a district in Nebraska. They are a diverse group with 40% of the student body being economically disadvantaged. I am new to the district this year and have discovered many talented musicians at my school. They read music very well and are learning to play a variety of musical instruments.

The previous music teacher did little to no movement activities with the children. I've found it difficult to entice them with the idea of moving their bodies to music. As a teacher of music, I realize that many children learn music through their bodies! Even as an adult it is crucial to "feel" a sense of pulse within a piece of music. However, students have expressed their interest in a set of scarves that sit in the music room. Unfortunately these scarves belong to another school! Our budget in the music department does not cover items such as scarves, ribbon wands, or parachutes. We barely have enough money to purchase enough instruments for every child. Requesting these items from my administration is out of the question.

I am asking that scarves, ribbon wands, and a large parachute be purchased for my music class. If I brought these items in the classroom, I know that the children couldn't help themselves and would be inspired to move.

These props will help my students become better musicians through kinesthetic movement. Their singing, playing, and reading will surely improve because of their physical responses to music. I know that they will be proud to have such props in their classroom and be inspired to create and share their ideas at performances.
