Social Awareness Through Howard Zinn

My students need 25 copies of the book "A Young People's History of the United States, Vol. 1 : Columbus to the Robber Barons" to learn about different perspectives in history.

Christoper Columbus was not the first person to reach America. Student in my 8th grade US History class were blow away when we focused on the Native American perspective of European contact in the "New World." They were blown away to read that within 100 years of European contact, an entire Native population went extinct in this "New World." They learned this new perspective through Howard Zinn's, A Young People's History of the United States, Vol. 1 : Columbus to the Robber Barons. Our school is a low-income and high diversity school in Washington State. Located in a suburban city, our diversity includes Native American students and new immigrant students from Latin America, Russia and the Ukraine. I teach US History with a focus on critical thinking and multiple perspectives in history.

With such diversity comes the need for students to learn about the under-represented (and often minority) voices in history. This often gives students a chance to 'see' themselves in the history and to make connections with their real life experiences. When I first used "A Young People's History of the United States," I saw a spark light up in the eyes of my students. Many kids, for the first time, began to ask questions. Other students were almost outraged that they had never learned this "new" perspective in elementary school. Howard Zinn's perspective of historical events challenges our notions of truth, getting students to think about themselves and events of the past through a lens that is not always available through their history text (our school has textbooks published in 1986). Using this particular book will give students an opportunity to see a more encompassing view of the past. In addition, this book will help many of our struggling and unmotivated students the confidence to ask burning questions.

"A Young People's History of the United States" is a shortened version of the original book, "A People's History of the United States." This book is intended for middle and high school audiences. It takes complex issues of the past and breaks them down into a language that is accessible to all students. In addition, "A Young People's History" includes written and visual primary source documents so that students can understand 'first-hand' accounts of the past. I am requesting a class set of books (25) so that all students (110 total) have the same opportunity to interact with the text.

"A Young People's History" has a perspective of history not usually found in textbooks. Students who read different perspectives become empowered by ideas and ask more questions. They begin to develop a desire for life long learning and hopefully, a quest for truths. Your help will ensure that students do not leave K-12 schooling without a diverse perspective of history.
