Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

A "WOW" Center for a wonderful group of students~ I teach a diverse group of students. 44% are Hispanic, 28% are Caucasian, 24% are African American, and 4% are Asian. 80% of our students receive free/reduced lunch. I have inclusion students, an entire class of Exceptional Students without an assistant, a high level of Spanish speaking students, English as Second Language students, and a roster with an extremely low academic group of students this year. I have hearing impaired students, many students with emotional needs, and many behavioral problem students. The diversity is great, but not so great that we can not make a difference.

The affluent child is the minority~ The affluent child is rare in my classes. Most children have parents that both work to try and make a living, some have only one parent at home, while most are at poverty levels. My students do not have the materials needed to do presentations, projects, skits, etc for classes because they do not have the funds to buy them. I believe that doing these types of assessments provides the students with a way to prove that they have learned and can apply a given concept, rather than just spit out right answers on a test. An informal way of assessing is presentations. I start my students off at the beginning of the year with a short presentation that last only 3-5 minutes and by the end of the year it is a presentation that last 30 minutes long. There is such a thing called the "WOW" factor which is simply going beyond what the rubric says. It is thinking "outside of the box" and doing the extraordinary. We have a population of students who do not wish to think on their own, yet alone think outside the box. I want to push my students to go beyond the norm.

There are many things that I need in order to incorporate a "WOW" Center in my classroom. Some of the pieces needed are a Digital Camera, a Podium, A Camcorder, and a Voice Recorder. With these pieces of technology the sky is the limit for my kids. This will encourage them to think "outside the box" and earn those "WOW" factor points in every presentation. I know that they have it in them, I want to give them what is needed to encourage action and then be able to put it all into motion.

Your help will make a difference in so many lives. But, if it only one were helped, it would be worth it. There are so many that just look the other way, but you reading this right now assures me that you are not one who looks the other way. You are someone who cares about others and someone who wishes to make a difference. I pray that you would consider making a difference in my kids lives. I assure you that they are WORTH it! Thanks so much for considering my proposal~
