I am a third grade teacher in an urban public school. I teach 26 amazing students everyday who are excited to learn with their peers. In my classroom, 25 of the students receive free or reduced lunch and many students are English Language Learners. I have 6 students who receive ESL services daily and 3 students who receive special education services daily. In my classroom, there are at least 4 non-readers.

I want all of my students to succeed. My students are at varying levels of instruction, which makes planning difficult, especially in reading. I would like to find a way to help all of my students improve their reading level. Independent reading for enjoyment is something that we do on a daily basis. Most of my students love picking books from our library and reading to themselves. Unfortunately, for some of my students, especially my special education students, this is a challenge. They are unable to read independently. They become frustrated and some are embarrassed to receive assistance with words they cannot decode. The special education teacher and I spend time reading with these students- but the time is always limited due to the demands of a busy classroom. I want a center to help my students read more fluently and independently. A listening center is helpful, but I find that when a student is listening to a story, they often lose track of their place in a paragraph.

I would like to introduce the Tag reading system by Leap Frog to my classroom, giving more access to my struggling readers and English Language Learners in order to promote fluency as well as comprehension. The Tag School Reader is an easy-to-use hand held learning tool for students. This personal learning tool responds to every touch on specially printed books and materials, with audio feedback and on-demand reading assistance. Students reading can touch a single word to hear the pronunciation or an icon to hear the story read. Even the pictures come to life for added story context and background information. This will help students with comprehension, vocabulary development, phonics, and phonemic awareness. This will allow all of my students the opportunity to read independently in an enjoyable manner.
