A Fenced Area And NO Playground Equipment!!

My students need a sandbox.

I am a first year teacher for the Pre-Kindergarten students. Located at the back of the school I have a nice fenced in area that is specifically designated for Pre-K students but guess what’s missing? You guessed it, playground equipment. Not having playground equipment is like not having milk to go with your cookie!!

I am writing to propose a solution to a problem for our Pre-Kindergarten Playground. The problem is that our playground is a nice fenced in area without the necessary materials for the children to learn and play. Careful planning and thought must go into designing a safe but challenging playground which meets individual needs and interests and age characteristics and abilities of the children who will use it. The purpose of outdoor play is essential for children’s health and well being. The sense of peace and pleasure children experience when they take in the fresh air, feel the warmth of the sun on their backs, and watch a butterfly land gently on a flower is immeasurable. What is very evident is how much children enjoy running, jumping, climbing, and playing outdoors. The time children spend outdoors every day is just as important to their learning as the time they spend in the classroom. For teachers, the outdoors offers many ways to enrich the curriculum and support children’s development and learning.

The Pre-Kindergarten Playground on campus is in a separate location and has a fence. Unfortunately, the Pre-Kindergarten playground consists only of grass. I do not have the necessary materials for facilitating learning and play. There are two Pre-Kindergarten classrooms with 15 students in each class. Currently, we share the Kindergarten-Second grade playground which does not meet the North Carolina Rated License Assessment Project. According to their assessment the playground space outside used by the Pre-Kindergarten children is not fenced in posing safety concerns. Additionally, the depth of the mulch under the two play structures and balance beam used by the children is not the adequate cushioning around all fall zones to protect against injury from falls. I feel that first and foremost the safety of my children is critical. Using the The Kindergarten-Second grade playground increases the risk of injuries for my Pre-Kindergarten children as they adapt to the larger equipment and to the fast movement of the older children. Another problem with not having the necessary playground equipment for the Pre-Kindergarten Playground is that my children’s learning and play are limited.

This is especially important to our Pre-Kindergarten children. They will gain language skills to communicate effectively, explore concepts of geometry, build an understanding of similarities and differences in plants and animals, build an understanding of weather concepts, build an understanding of the properties/movement of common objects and organisms, increase an understanding of how the world works by using tools, and citizenship. Physical Education is an essential part of our lives. My children and I would love to start next school year off with a new look to our fenced in area.
