Doing My Own Thing

My students need 2 computers for independent research during class time, tutorials, and advisory periods.

Ms. Roesch It Takes A Village Academy
Brooklyn, NY Grades 9-12

Remember when every kid in your class was doing the same thing at the same time? Pretty boring, huh? We've learned since then. Students should be able to pursue different topics at different times. Which means that students should have access to a good classroom library and a computer. This is especially true in the high school where I teach Global History to 9th and 10th graders. We've made good progress with the library. Books are comparatively cheap. But there's a long way to go with the computers that my students can use to pursue independent research during class and also during tutorial and advisory periods that we provide for precisely this reason.

Who are these students? They're a predominantly minority (87%) population enrolled in a new (we're in our second year) school. Many (60%) are eligible for the free lunch program, which means they're below the poverty line and don't have access to technology at home. A fair number also struggle with reading and writing skills--40% read below grade level and 30% are recent immigrants who read and speak languages other than English. We're also in an area that, as is true of so many, has been hard hit by the current economic crisis. As a result, we're facing serious budget shortfalls.

Why would a computer in our classroom help these kids? First, and most obviously, teenagers like computers. They're far more likely to pursue a topic on line than they are to plow through a book. This is especially true of students who have problems with reading. Second, a computer provides access to information that isn't always readily available in print format. Third, it empowers students to ask and answer their own questions: "Why do they call it the Red Sea?" "If Buddhists fast, why is Buddha so fat?" (These are actual classroom examples.) Finally, access to a computer is access to technology that students will use for the rest of their lives.

What will your support do for my students? It will give them the chance to become independent thinkers and learners. It will allow them to discover and share, empowering students. Finally, it will bring my classroom into the 21st century.
