"Music is the universal language of mankind." ~Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. "What we provide is an atmosphere... of orchestrated pulse which works on people in a subliminal way. Under its influence I've seen shy debs and severe dowagers kick off their shoes and raise some wholesome hell. ~Meyer Davis, about his orchestra. I teach over one hundred 6th-8th graders at an inner-city bilingual school with most students coming from impoverished homes. Besides teaching my students Language Arts and Science in our classroom, I also understand a truly influential teacher's role goes well beyond just teaching the academic curriculum. Our students unfortunately do not have the luxury of a music program at our school, due to increasing financial cuts in our school's budget. My students and I were extremely appreciative last year to have received an Electronic Dance-Dance Revolution Video Game System from a previous Donorschoose.org donation so that my students can compete in dance competitions during their indoor recess time. I can not say enough about how that dance system continues to develop a more enthusiastic and cooperative classroom environment, and thus will continue to for many years to come. This proposal seeks a Karaoke system so that my students can continue to enjoy their indoor recess time, at the same time making up for our school's lack of funding for a music program. The songs that I will order for the system will be in both English and Spanish, which will further develop my students bilingual skills and also ensure that our newcomer students feel more at home. Longfellow was right when he said music is the universal language. Students who may lack in English communication skills at this time, will be able to shine through singing.
