Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

The history of a business really comes alive when you get to know about its founder. I am one of the library media specialists in a large (1700 students) high school. We serve an extremely diverse population; according to one of our feeder elementary schools, students' families speak more than 30 languages at home. Some of our students are able readers; others are struggling. The area is also racially and economically diverse, making these students incredibly challenging, but incredibly rewarding, to work with.

For several years, one of our business teachers has been assigning his classes a report on a company -- not on how its stock is doing, but on who founded it and why, and on whatever unique element has made that company successful (or, in some cases, not). I have been gradually adding materials to the collection, but Business is just one of many departments the library media center must purchase resources for, so the expansion of this portion of the collection has been slow, albeit steady. This particular teacher and I have been talking about expanding and intensifying his company histories project.

To support this project, I would like to purchase a larger number of company/business leader-related books than I would ordinary place in an annual book order. I am requesting some of these titles in this proposal. Some are longer titles written for adults; others are intended for a younger audience but are appropriate for struggling readers in the class. Added to what my library media center already owns, and what I am ordering through our budget, this should provide our business students with a solid basis on which to begin their research into companies and their founders.

Many of us use Google every time we sit down at a computer -- but seldom do we consider that, for Google to exist, someone (or, in this case, two someones) had to dream it up and make it happen. We eat Wendys hamburgers, sip Coca-Cola, and shop at Target. All of these companies began with an idea. This project will encourage students to keep in mind that, in the backstory of the myriad things they see and use every day, there lies a person with a unique vision and the drive to make that vision a reality.
