For The Birds

My outdoor education students need kits and supplies to assemble 20 bird feeders for our Middle School.

The after-school science adventure group at our Middle School consists of 15-20 students, grades 5-8, who are working to make our new school facility environmentally friendly. Our school grounds are nestled in the western Appalachia region of southern Ohio and we attract many species of birds to our site. Our building has a long glass lined hall way that all students use 1-2 times a day. These feeders would give all students in our building an opportunity to view the birds. Our first bird feeders were made from gourds from my farm, and with the assistance of my husband, who drilled each gourd, the students sanded, painted, sealed and hung these homemade gourds in preparation for the first snowfall. We have found that these are difficult to fill and the birds are wasting much of the feed. The students researched the types of birds and their feeding patterns. I have requested two types of feeders; one refillable and one edible. The refillable feeders will allow the students to use math skills to construct the feeders and use skills developed in art to make the feeders attractive using the paints I have requested. The edible bird feeders provide many of the seeds that our native birds enjoy over the winter months. These feeders may give students an idea of ways they can use cafeteria scraps to feed some birds. This is the first year for our Science Adventure Club and students are excited to get out each day and work in nature. Funds are limited for any projects they want to accomplish this year. I am amazed at the mix of students, grades 5-8 that this project has attracted. We have abroad range from the honor students to the ones that struggle to read on grade level, ones that have weekly right-ups for behavior and ones that never are referred to the office. I think that spending this 180 minutes a week outside is great adventure for all of them. I want this project to assist in feeding birds and to build character among the students that are participating. I want them to take responsibility for not only making the feeders but keeping them filled on a daily basis. Your generous support will make it possible to make our school environmentaly friendly. In recent years we have planted spring flowering bulbs and students love the spring when they can see the benefit of their work. I know that this years groups will feel the same way when they see the birds eating at their feeders. Your support is bringing a community of school children together. We are using science as the hook to assist them in reading, math, measurement and research. I thank you in advance for any assistance you can give at this time.
