Mass to moles to particles and atoms to moles to mass to limiting reactants to stoichiometry! If this seems scary to you, imagine the terror it can strike into the heart of a 15 year old. I teach chemistry in the largest non-metro high school in Tennessee, and every day I expect my students to meet very high expectations and solve intricate problems like these.

Chemistry includes a strong math component. Students must be proficient in the use of a scientific calculator to efficiently complete long or difficult calculations. Although a few students have their own calculators, they are all of different brands. Unfortunately, I cannot provide individual instruction to each student on the particular operations of each calculator because of the sheer numbers of students and calculators involved. In addition, the students who do not have scientific calculators have no resource, as I cannot afford to provide enough calculators for the students without them.

With a classroom set of the same brand of calculator, every student will be assured of having a calculator available for classwork, tests, and quizzes. Since the calculators will all be the same brand, I will be able to teach the students exactly how to perform the operations to achieve correct solutions. I have also requested a calculator that works with an overhead projector so that I can demonstrate the exact keystrokes required. This will make a tremendous difference in my students' ability to handle complicated scientific calculations and in their confidence.

Many students feel overwhelmed by the math involved in a course like chemistry. Not having access to a scientific calculator needlessly adds to the difficulty of the coursework. Your kind and generous donation will level the playing field for all my students and help them to get excited about the science since they will no longer fear the math.
