A Laptop to Enrich My Students' Learning

My students need a Panasonic Toughbook 30 laptop computer.

Located on Potrero Hill, one of the most picturesque neighborhoods in San Francisco, our school is a haven for students that come from some of the worst and most dangerous neighborhoods in town. Since being deemed a program improvement school, meaning most of our students are performing below grade level, the state of California has demanded that we dedicate a majority of our time teaching state-adopted curriculum in Math and Language Arts. As a result, finding space in the day for students to engage in any type of enrichment activities is nearly impossible.

Incorporating technology into any lesson is one of the easiest ways to provide enrichment during the day. Spending time in our school's computer lab seems like an easy fix, but when my students are there, they are still expected to work on Language Arts and Math. I have tried, with some success, to integrate the use of my own personal laptop into my teaching, working with my students to create PowerPoint presentations, exploring with a digital microscope, projecting their work on the board using our LCD projector - even teaching them how to surf the web safely and responsibly. That was tricky enough when I taught sophisticated fifth graders. This year I have been blessed with a wonderful group of third-graders who unfortunately do not have the most delicate fingers and, for lack of a better word, tend to be a bit clumsy in comparison.

My students simply do not have enough access to technology. I’ve gone through three laptops in as many years, and I am now using a loaner from a friend that, unfortunately, is hands off to my students. These kids need something that won’t break when it gets knocked around. I discovered that the Panasonic Toughbook is the one laptop that fits the ticket. It is seemingly indestructible and can take the unintentional abuse my little ones can deal out. It is state-of-the-art, incorporating a touch screen that you can write on with a stylus and watch as your writing is converted into text.--all this and it is so strong it can survive a drop of three feet.

The cost of this proposal might seem high – it actually equals the cost of my three previous laptops combined, but you would be helping me provide my students with an amazing resource that I couldn't offer them on my own. Today’s children are so used to things that seemed totally impossible when we were young. I am confident that this piece of technology will not only change my teaching, but will also take my students to another level in terms of their technological know-how and get them more than ready for the future. I would be honored if you would fund this proposal, and I thank you for your consideration.
