I teach kindergarten in a high poverty school where students come to school with very few learning experiences. In order for them to learn to their greatest potential, it is important to make learning fun and meaningful but often times resources are few.

In high poverty schools it is essential to make learning active and interesting. In my kindergarten classroom, making literacy fun and effective is essential but materials and supplies to create these interactive centers are often scarce. It would be fabulous to be able to provide my students with a variety of hands on activities to use to make learning how to read and write fun and active.

My school requires teachers to use workshops in order for students to make the most of their time in learning. Workshops are wonderful when they are interactive and students have the materials to actively create words, manipulate letters and enjoy the process of self discovery while manipulating the alphabet and words. If we had Lakeshore Vocabulary Builder books for our workshops the students would be able to explore print awareness, vocabulary development, read high frequency words, and build fluency. We would also benefit from the Lakeshore Literacy Chest because it has a wide variety of activities that could be used to enhance several literacy workshop areas including, hands-on manipulatives for sorting and matching to word building flip books, sound blending sliders, sight-word stories and much more. Lakeshore Magnetic Tub-o-Letters would allow students to be able to manipulate letters to inventive spell, build fluency, create sentences and more. By providing the materials necessary to make these centers fun and active, you would be providing opportunities for disadvantaged children to explore alphabet, letter sounds, words, literature and become fluent readers and writers.

By helping to provide essential materials and supplies for our literacy workshops, you would be helping to ensure that my students become successful learners in an active and hands-on environment where they will see that learning is not only important, but absolutely FUN!
