Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a second-year teacher of government, economics, and world history at a comprehensive school in a high-needs community in central California. Our school is brand new; we graduated our first senior class last year. Because we are a new school, we lack many resources and facilities of a newer school. For example, the two computers labs in the library contain 70 computers that must serve over 1,600 students. The majority of our students (89%) are Latino, and more than 40% are English Language Learners. Over 60% of our students are low-income and quality for free or reduced lunch. Many of my students are the children of migrant farm-workers and will be the first in their families to graduate from high school. Despite these challenges, many of our students have achieved their dream of attending a four-year university or community college.

Many of my students have never traveled beyond our county line. Some students have traveled to Mexico, but very few have traveled throughout the U.S. or to other countries. My students are hungry to see the world, and to experience new cultures. Seeing differences in the way people live help bring alive the social studies and make otherwise abstract content real and exciting. For example, in starting off a World History unit on Imperialism, I showed my students photos from George Steinmetz's African Air series. They were hooked and wanted to learn more about Africa and its people.

In order to show my students beautiful, color photographs and important primary source historical documents, I need a document projector and projection screen. In addition, this technology will allow me to showcase student work. For example, my students recently completed compelling and apt political cartoons about the state of the U.S economy. A document projector would allow me to show exemplary student work to the whole class to facilitate discussion and reflection. The uses for this important classroom technology are endless, exciting, and critical for engaging students.

Your generosity and support will help bring the social studies alive and will help empower my students to become global citizens. These tools will also facilitate a community of learners who discuss and constructively critique projects and assessments.
