When you were a child, did you ever envision in your mind what a place looked like? When you finally saw the map or picture, was it anything like you thought it would be? I used to do that all the time. Now that I am a teacher, my students do the same and have the same results.

It is amazing when we think something looks a certain way and it turns out to be totally difference. For instance, my kids think that a country is the size of what is on the map. I want to be able to show my students the difference through maps and a variety of books and materials. It's fun to teach where other people live. It's really interesting to the kids, especially if they are from that area. They begin to understand more. The students love to pin a country or state they are going to research on the web. It is good for them to be able to place it on the map and know what area they are studying.

The maps give the students an idea of where the country is. The stories help them to understand the different cultures and how they live. The students learn from other students who are from that country. Now, every time they eat a taco, they know it was from Mexico; Pizza from Italy; China is eggrolls. It really makes them think.

I personally feel the children will benefit from social studies. It is a subject that has been changed every year with our expanding cultures. We need to be updated with our world today. This is a start. Thank you and have a nice day! Have a Great Day!
