Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a Title I school, which means many of my students are economically disadvantaged. We are a small rural Texas school that is going through some financial hardships. Our main focus is to educate students to prepare them for a future after high school, in spite of obstacles that are out of our control.
Despite daily challenges, my students are learning to overcome challenges and be successful.
They enjoy learning when I am able to take math off of the paper and make it tangible to them.
My Project
My students are portraying themselves as a company that creates mini golf courses, and are designing one golf hole to pitch to a miniature golf business. The hole must fit into a specified area, with the square footage of the golf green calculated. Students will be using graph paper to create two designs. One will be a blue print with the area calculated, and the other will be a full color example of their design.
This project allows my students to experience what it is like to create a business presentation.
They are to use folders to create a business portfolio that will contain their blueprint, color design, and a written letter to explain why their design is best. Students are also creating a 3-D model using craft foam sheets, small wood dowels, and cardboard to include in their pitch.
A putting green, putter, and golf balls are used as an introduction to the project to peak interest in what the students will be learning. This project will give my students skills that reach well beyond the classroom.
