Have you ever read a passage or a book chapter and not understood what you just read when you finish? My African American seventh-grade students in our suburban South Carolina school frequently experience this same feeling.

Due to former and more recent budget cuts, my students do not have access to excellent novels written about and by African Americans.

The students enjoy reading Sharon Draper novels because her writing style is appealing to middle-school students and she writes about high-school students from a personal perspective. When I read personal copies aloud to my classes, the students want to stay in my room all day to find out what will happen next. They're hooked on Draper's novels and need to have the ability to read and hear the novels. Those with learning difficulties need to be able to see and hear the text at the same time.

Your donation will provide the chance for my struggling readers to get hooked on reading for life.
