Picture one hundred and eighty exuberant kindergarten students wearing shirts that celebrate their success in learning the first sixty high frequency words that form the foundation for reading! As a Literacy Coach for a Title I school in the San Fernando Valley in Southern California, I have the privilege of working with every student in every grade level. My job includes providing teachers with demonstration lessons in all aspects of the language arts curriculum. Our Kindergarten teachers have chosen reading and vocabulary development as our target areas for improvement. Our school is a safe haven located in the center of a violent and economically disadvantaged neighborhood. More than 95% of our students are English Learners and have limited English speaking support at home. We provide our students with a secure place to learn and grow. One of the most important things we do as teachers is to help our students understand the importance of learning. Parents in this depressed area have limited education and background knowledge which, in turn, limits their ability to help their children. Their stressful life circumstances leave them with little to celebrate. Kindergarten students at our school need to celebrate all of their successes as they learn to read. Our Kindergarten students already work on memorizing sets of words that correspond to the colors of the rainbow. Their names are placed on raindrops and moved along the color bars of the rainbow as they learn each set of words. Every week more students meet their reading goal and effectively “join the readers’ club.” That sense of belonging is especially important in Kindergarten when children are learning how to be students. The student body celebrates Kindergarteners' successes during Monday morning assemblies. These shirts are often viewed on the backs of students when they enter first grade as they continue their success in learning. Even teachers and administrators wear the shirts in celebration. Your help will ensure that our youngest students have a chance to shine, to know that their efforts are worthwhile and that they are important to our extended learning community.
