Mrs. L. Ridge View High School
Columbia, SC Grades 9-12

Music is alive for my students! I am a high school English teacher at a diverse high school. Most of my students are lower-achieving students, and I have found that incorporating music into their lessons is extremely beneficial. Many of my students are from an impoverished background, so financial help is always appreciated.

My students, without fail, are interested in music. To name a few, their musical interests vary from rock, to hip-hop, to country, and to rap. I have found that by incorporating some of this music into their lessons and assignments, I am able to grab their attention and focus. For example, we just completed a project related to The Age of Reason and the Revolutionaries. The students were asked to analyze a patriotic or social protest song and present the song, a visual, and the analysis of the lyrics to the class while considering the time period in which the song was written. This proved to be a successful project; however, many of the students struggled with getting the songs they needed for the presentation because they didn't have a computer at home or were not allowed to bring their iPods to school.

Having an iPod and docking station in my classroom would be extremely beneficial because it would allow my students to more easily complete such projects as described earlier with a minimum cost to them. They would be allowed to download the music they need as well as use the other materials I would provide in class for their visual aides.

My students love music, and they feel that it is a necessary part of their everyday lives. I would like to be able to incorporate that important element by having a classroom iPod and docking station which would only contain school-friendly versions of songs. Also, by providing my students with materials to create visual aides, they will be able to showcase their artistic abilities and personal interpretations.
