Bringing the Water Cycle to Life!

My students need 6 lamps, 6 plastic containers, and 3 pounds of clay.

I work in an amazing middle school! We are very diverse and very large, with almost 1,000 students, but have been working hard to make sure every student has a connection to the school. I teach a lot of special education students, and I try to gear my lessons toward their learning styles by including high interest labs. These labs help to keep the students' attention as well as bring abstract concepts to life.

My students have shown a great interest in the water cycle, but are having trouble truly understanding such a large and abstract idea.

My students will fill the box with a few inches of water and build a mountain out of the clay. A petri dish of ice will be put on the top of the box to simulate the cool air in the atmosphere. The students will use the lamp to simulate the heat from the sun to watch how the water will evaporate and condense as it moves through the water cycle. By being able to create a working model of the water cycle, students will be able to better understand how the water on earth is naturally recycled.

Your help will ensure that my students will be given the opportunity to build their own water cycle and watch as the water on their "Earth" changes phases and moves through the water cycle.
