Social Emotional Learning: Teaching Skills For School & Life

My students need 28 good social-emotional and life skills themed books to receive as POSITIVE recognition for making good choices and following our NEW positive school-wide expectations!

I am a School Counselor at an inner city K-8 elementary school comprised of two separate buildings approximately 1.5 miles apart. 2007 data shows that 94% of our students are low income.

Many of our students don't have the necessary basic school supplies like pencils and paper, let alone own actual books. It can be so defeating to encourage students who are struggling to read and hear in return that there aren't any books at home!! Besides this, I feel that we have to nurture the WHOLE child. Students don't come to school to just learn how to read and write these days; they need to experience essential life skills too. As the Counselor, I'm leading the efforts to nurture students' social-emotional learning skills (i.e. decision-making, goal setting, coping with feelings, etc.) and build a more positive school climate. This year, we started the 'Falcon Four--The Way to Be' positive incentive system. Rather than a long list of negative "don'ts" for students, we have set four simple school-wide expectations that positively express the way to be at our school--BE Safe, BE Respectful, BE Responsible, and BE Your Best! Every staff person wears a lanyard with raffle slips to award to students caught demonstrating 'The Way to Be' at our school. We then conduct bi-monthly raffles for prizes.

This year, we are so excited to implement various new social emotional learning programs and start recognizing students for the good choices they make. What better reward can we give a child than a good book with a strong moral and social-emotional learning focus? With your help, we will be able to provide students who have demonstrated 'The Way To Be' with an age-appropriate book with a great message.

You will make it possible for my students to not only build their reading abilities but also to own their very own literary book with a great social emotional learning message that reinforces what we are teaching them in the classroom!! Equally exciting, the recipients will treasure the book at home and share it with their family members and friends. I smile to think of parents reading with their kids and being reminded of the fundamental social emotional learning message within.
