The Unacceptables Want Social Acceptance

My 50, gotta-be-cool students need a class set of "The Misfits", by James Howe.

Anti-Bullying Week Bullying is a serious issue in middle and high schools across the country. However, the bullying that occurs within our school community seriously interferes with the learning of my students, many of whom already struggle to handle the social issues and pressures they encounter in the outside world. Our school needs to be a haven from both verbal and physical violence in order for my students to acquire the academic skills and content they need to compete for college admission against students educated in more affluent areas. At the Title I middle school where I teach, we are struggling to provide students with the resources they need for successful personal and academic growth. We spend valuable learning time emphasizing the advantages of diversity and social acceptance. I have found that my students are most interested in developing their academic skills and discussing important social issues when the two are intertwined. They have been eagerly working their way through a Social Studies unit focused on understanding why some people treat others with cruelty. Based on this success and the challenge of finding whole class texts that my students find both engaging and meaningful, my co-teacher and I have planned a reading unit for November that centers around the reading of The Misfits, a book that frankly and humorously addresses the issues of cruelty and social acceptance in middle school. We are planning to reinforce this unit by having our students participate in National Anti-Bullying Week, November 17-21, 2008. Your support will ensure that my students have the inspiration and awareness they need to make our school a safer and more supportive learning environment. Thank you.
