Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach English as a Second Language to eighth graders in a high-need, Title 1 school. While my students are at a disadvantage due to their socio-economic circumstances, they are still eager to learn English and catch up to their native-speaking peers.

Any given day, my ESOL students flock to our classroom's "reading and writing center" to grab a bilingual dictionary. The availability of copies in any given language is so scarce, one must be quick in securing one for the day. Unfortunately, a great number of my students have to toil through textbooks without a bilingual dictionary to help them with the language.

Indeed, a bilingual dictionary is a lifesaver to a newly-arrived kid, who must learn all the core subjects in a new language. A bilingual dictionary is more than a mere translator, it is also the filter of much frustration encountered while learning about the characteristics of matter, the 13 colonies or the elements of a short story. The usefulness of bilingual dictionaries is even more evident when students engage in writing. Most of them naturally generate their ideas in their native language initially; then, they transfer them into English. That's the hard part. Therefore, having access to bilingual dictionaries allow them to complete writing tasks with more ease and proficiency.

A bilingual dictionary for every language learner means better results. Thanks to you, students will be more willing to take chances in their writing. Also, they will approach their assignments with less anxiety.
